The magic of herbs came to life this year with students at PS 85X! Students experienced a new WITS Herb Lab focused on the sense of smell in the classroom, thanks to a new WITS Partner, the fragrance company Givaudan. WITS Chefs and Givaudan Scientists taught students how herbs are grown and used, from culinary (adding flavor to food or in tea) to medicine (such as herbal supplements and extracts to treat conditions) to scent/fragrance for consumer goods (like in candles, shampoo, soaps, and perfume).
Classrooms got to make their own scent in the WITS Lab, using ingredients like mandarin peels and herbs like rosemary and mint combined with concentrated oils like lavender, orange, strawberry, and vanilla. This hands-on experience introduced students to new ways of using herbs and different flavors and many students wanted to learn more about making scents from the Givaudan Scientists. We are excited for Green for Kids to grow at PS 85X!
