In Green for Kids, WITS combines edible gardening with environmental education in a way that is interactive and accessible for all students and schools. Utilizing mobile, hydroponic “Tower Gardens” as our vehicle, WITS brings the school garden experience into classrooms and cafeterias for hands-on learning. Mirroring the WITS Culinary Labs, the WITS Green Labs provide lessons on sustainability theme such as conservation of natural resources and the benefits of growing locally.
In the Green for Kids program, students work with their WITS Green Liaison and school support staff to maintain the garden, monitor plant growth and development, and participate in Tower Garden harvests as plants reach maturity. Lettuces, herbs, tomatoes and other vegetables and fruits are harvested and sampled for WITS Café Days/Harvest Days with supplemental produce provided by the NYS Garden to Café program.
WITS educators also work with students in the cafeteria to introduce, implement, and improve recycling and composting programs. Our goal is to introduce sustainability into every part of the school day for a cleaner, greener place to learn and grow.
