PS87 Gets Serious about Physical Fitness
Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, PS87 is a K-5 grammar school with approximately 979 students. PS87 is well known in the city, especially amongst parents, for its unique programming and progressive attitudes. The involved teachers, parents, and staff at the school continuously develop new approaches to engaging students around academics, healthy eating, and fitness.
In 2009, PS87 invested in a new program, Coach for Kids, then in its pilot phase, to help keep its students active on the recess yard. Before Wellness in the Schools and Coach for Kids came to PS87, the school had employed private sports programs to work with students on the playground, but found the cost increasingly prohibitive. The school’s administration saw Coach for Kids as an exciting new venture, one that was both affordable and strongly supported by parents.

WITS in the Press:
This fall WITS has been grateful for the support of two champions of the good food movement: Chef Jamie Oliver and Chef Ann Cooper. At the beginning of the month we were reached out to by Jamie's Food Revolution team to write a feature story about what was in store for WITS, named Food Revolution heroes this summer, in the 2011-2012 school year. You can read our article in the Food Revolution blog here.
WITS also had the honor of being named a Lunchbox Hero this October by Chef Ann Cooper's organization, The Lunchbox.org. The Lunch Box team believes that anyone feeding children healthy food is a hero. They share the stories of the unsung heroes of school food who are working hard across the country to change how we feed our children. Read WITS' story here
